Connectivity and Data Rates

The Calyx 4G supports 4G LTE-FDD (Cat 4) with up to 75 Mbps downlink and 50 Mbps uplink, as well as 4G LTE-TDD (Cat 4) with up to 65 Mbps downlink and 35 Mbps uplink. In DC-HSPA+ mode, the module achieves 42 Mbps downlink and 5.76 Mbps uplink. Backward compatibility covers 3G at 384 kbps in both directions, 2G EDGE at 236.8 kbps, and 2G GPRS at 85.6 kbps. The implemented 3GPP release is version 9.

The supported frequency bands include LTE-FDD B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B20, and B28, as well as LTE-TDD B38, B40, and B41. For 3G, bands B1 and B8 are supported, while 2G covers B3 and B8. This ensures compatibility with European mobile networks.

Design and Mounting

The Calyx 4G is designed as a HAT+ module for the Raspberry Pi 4 and 5, plugging directly onto the single-board computer’s 40-pin GPIO header. With dimensions of 56 x 23.11 x 95.48 mm and a weight of 57 g, it integrates seamlessly into existing setups. The included mounting kit ensures secure and stable installation.

Power is supplied via the 40-pin header or USB at 5 VDC; the 40-pin header provides both 5 VDC and 3.3 VDC. Data communication with the host is handled via a USB 2.0 interface through a USB Type-C connector.

Interfaces and Modem Control

The modem can be controlled directly via the 40-pin GPIO header: the PWR_KEY input activates the modem with a pulse of at least 500 ms at 0 to 3.3 V logic level (active high). A separate digital input wakes the modem from sleep mode, also active high at 0 to 3.3 V. The reset input resets the modem, likewise active high.

The PCM interface operates as a digital interface with 0 to 3.3 V logic level, enabling clean, low-latency audio transmission. Status LEDs for power, NET IND, and NET STAT provide information on operational and network status. A push-pull Nano-SIM slot (4FF) and two SMA antenna connectors for mobile networks complete the physical interfaces.
