- MIMO-Optimized: 2x2 MIMO with four ports for enhanced signal reliability in mining and tunnel environments
Overview & Functionality
The HELI-40 extends Poynting’s HELI antenna series with a dual-band Wi-Fi antenna for the 2400–2500 MHz and 5000–6000 MHz frequency ranges. It is designed to radiate bi-directionally within a tunnel, making it ideal for covering both Wi-Fi bands in mines and other tunnel types. The antenna is specifically engineered for mounting on vehicles and equipment to enable telemetry and mining automation within tunnels.
The antenna is supplied as standard with both left-hand and right-hand circular polarization to achieve optimal decorrelation in MIMO deployments. The combination of polarization and frequency diversity enhances MIMO performance and RF reliability in mine tunnels. Circular polarization allows the dual-band Wi-Fi frequencies to propagate around tunnel bends in non-line-of-sight scenarios, improving link stability and reliability.
Applications
The antenna is designed for mining and tunneling applications, targeting M2M and IoT deployments in these environments. Key use cases include communication, telemetry, and automation (M2M & IoT) on mining vehicles and machinery. The antenna also supports full underground tunnel connectivity for vehicle tracking and personnel safety.
Mechanical & Environmental Specifications
The radome is made of UV-stable black ASA plastic and is built for harsh environments. The antenna achieves IK10 impact resistance and IP68 protection against water and dust ingress. It is tested to MIL-STD 810G/ASTM B117 for salt spray resistance and has a UL 94-HB flammability rating for its housing.
Wind resistance is rated up to 220 km/h, and the permissible operating temperature range spans from −40 °C to +70 °C. Relative humidity during operation can reach up to 98%. Mounting options include spigot and surface mounting, the latter with a magnetic base option. The optional accessory MBK-1 is available separately.
Connectors & Cabling
The antenna features four ports with N-Type male connectors. The coaxial cable used is RG58 with a length of 300 mm. Cable loss is 0.97 dB/m at 2400 MHz and 2.0 dB/m at 5800 MHz. Nominal input impedance is 50 ohms, and the maximum input power is 10 W. A DC short circuit is present, and isolation between ports is less than −20 dB in both frequency bands.
Certifications & Compliance
The antenna complies with RoHS 2011/65/EU and is certified to ISO 9001:2015 and CE standards. The warranty period is 24 months. These compliance details confirm adherence to the specified norms and standards for the product.
