Mobile and Network Connectivity

The RUT271 supports 5G SA (Standalone) architecture compliant with 3GPP Release 17 RedCap, with 4G LTE Cat 4 backward compatibility delivering speeds of 195 Mbps downlink and 105 Mbps uplink. The router manages band locking, country-based operator blacklisting/whitelisting, and the ability to use multiple PDNs for different network services. Bridge and passthrough functions enable a direct connection between the mobile operator and LAN equipment, or the assignment of the mobile WAN IP address to another device.

WAN failover relies on four backup sources — Wi-Fi WAN, mobile, VRRP, and wired — each configurable for automatic failover. Load balancing distributes internet traffic across multiple WAN connections, while static, dynamic (BGP, OSPF v2, RIP v1/v2, EIGRP, NHRP), and policy-based routing provide deployment flexibility. The router also supports DNS over HTTPS for secure DNS resolution and DDNS with over 25 service providers.

Security and VPN

The RUT271 features a firewall with port forwarding, traffic rules, and custom rules, complemented by attack prevention functions covering DDoS (SYN flood, SSH, HTTP/HTTPS), port scans (SYN-FIN, SYN-RST, X-mas, NULL, FIN), and connection attempt blocking. Authentication is based on pre-shared keys, X.509 digital certificates, TACACS+, and internal or external RADIUS users, with time-based IP and login attempt blocking.

The router supports multiple VPN protocols: OpenVPN with 27 encryption methods, IPsec with 14 encryption methods (IKEv1 and IKEv2), GRE, GRE over IPsec, PPTP, L2TP, L2TPv3, L2TP over IPsec, Stunnel, DMVPN (Phase 2, Phase 3, and Dual Hub), SSTP, ZeroTier, WireGuard, and Tinc. Port- and tag-based VLAN separation, web filtering via blacklists/whitelists, and flexible access control for SSH, web interface, CLI, and Telnet complete the security suite.

IoT and Automation Features

The RUT271 supports Modbus TCP with custom register blocks for extending the Modbus TCP client, and DLMS for utility meter data exchange. The Data to Server function extracts parameters from multiple sources and protocols to send them to a single server, with support for custom LUA scripts. HTTP(S), MQTT, and Azure MQTT protocols are available for integration with IoT platforms.

The router includes one digital input (0-6 V low level, 8-30 V high level) and one digital output (open collector, 30 V max, 300 mA) on the 4-pin power connector. I/O Juggler allows defining I/O conditions to trigger events notified via email, SMS, or RMS. Mobile quota control enables setting data limits with customizable periods, start times, warning thresholds, and phone numbers.

Wi-Fi and Hotspot

The RUT271 integrates an 802.11b/g/n (Wi-Fi 4) module operating in access point or station mode, supporting up to 50 simultaneous connections. Wi-Fi security includes WPA2-Enterprise (PEAP), WPA2-PSK, WPA3-SAE, WPA3-EAP, and OWE, with AES-CCMP and TKIP encryption, client isolation, Protected Management Frames (802.11w), and EAP-TLS authentication with PKCS#12 certificates. Connectivity features include wireless mesh (802.11s), fast roaming (802.11r), BSS transition management (802.11v), and radio resource measurement (802.11k).

The hotspot captive portal supports internal and external RADIUS servers, SMS authentication, SSO authentication, internal or external landing pages, walled garden, user scripts, URL parameters, user groups, and individual or group-based limitations, with 9 customizable default themes.

Hardware Design and Power Supply

The RUT271 is powered by a 580 MHz Mediatek MIPS 24KEc processor, 128 MB of DDR2 RAM, and 16 MB of NOR Flash memory. It features 2 RJ45 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports compliant with IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, and 802.3az standards with auto MDI/MDIX, split into 1 WAN port and 1 LAN port. The RutOS operating system, based on OpenWrt Linux, manages all router functions.

Power is supplied via a 4-pin industrial DC connector with a voltage range of 9-30 VDC, reverse polarity protection, and overvoltage protection above 31 VDC. Passive PoE Mode B allows powering the router via the LAN1 port (9-30 VDC), without compatibility with IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, or 802.3bt standards. Power consumption reaches 1.5 W at idle and 3 W at maximum load. Antennas include 2 SMA connectors for mobile and 1 RP-SMA connector for Wi-Fi.
